Instagram has become an integral part of many people’s lives. It provides a platform for sharing memorable, fun and unique moments and as the hype around Instagram grows, it is becoming that much harder to surprise your followers with the things you share.

A photographer based in LA name Reza Bahrami initiated a project called “ReCognition” in order to “re-create some of the craziest moments of people’s lives”. After filtering through around 5000 public Instagram accounts, she chose the pictures that she felt were the most creative, dramatic and authentic photos. Her project is designed to show the real emotions in the pictures that are hiding amidst the plethora of shared filtered selfies.

In her words, Bahrami “want[s] to be more authentic on social media and follow more human stories”. She continued by pointing out that “people often find it uncomfortable being themselves on Instagram and I want to move beyond the fake selfies and challenge others to express their tears, anger and the idea that we don’t need to be superhumans.”

Although the majority of viewers appreciated the idea and message behind the project, there were some who were quick to accuse Reza of a lack of creativity and talent. These users were quick to remark that using pictures of other people without them knowing might be a potential copyright infringement. Reza despite these negative comments is keen to continue her controversial project and is planning on recreating many more crazy moments.

Below we show some of her recreated artwork.

11. Spaghetti Everywhere

The initial photo by another user shows a bunch of spaghetti lying on the ground next to a person’s feet. The comment associated with the photo indicates that dinner preparation between new roommates isn’t going according to plan. The recreated photo shows the spaghetti as it falls to the ground. The Project ReCognition team was able to dramatize the event by playing with the camera lens and angles.

10. The Face of a Model

Why can’t we be true to ourselves on social media? The idea behind @ProjectReCognition is simple. We selected around 100 photos from public accounts on Instagram and we are recreating and reshooting these photos again in Los Angeles! The people we chose are different. We admire their bravery and ability to express themselves openly on social media. We believe Instagram can be more than filtered selfies. This project is a way of questioning our behavior on social media by focusing on ordinary yet dramatic moments of our life. Thank you so much @mon.morfin for your inspiration. We really enjoyed recreating this shot. The initial picture that Reza’s team took inspiration from plays on the idea that, in this day and age, we are all trying to be like the celebrities we see in magazines and movies. The recreated image takes the idea, but instead of recreating the image in the bathroom, the initial environment, it is recreated in a more public environment, a restaurant.

9. Wine over Milk

Instead of trying to drink an excess quantity of milk, as in the original, the image has been recreated using wine. Additionally, the model in the recreated image is far less careful to avoid spills. Because of these differences, the recreated image appears to be far more colorful and dramatic.

8. Don’t be Rude

Photos of rebellious teens pointing their middle fingers at the camera are fairly common. However, the picture is recreated in a manner that gives far more thought to the surroundings. The trees on either side provide a nice bit of symmetry and the use of a black and white feature adds dramatic effect.

7. Be Careful with Knives

The two pictures here seem to form a sort of sequence. The second picture may be trying to show that the man in the first photo slightly cut his finger causing him to put down his cigarette and the knife. The lighting and the placement of objects really makes the photo appear to be of a scene from a movie.

6. Creative … I Guess

When we scroll through our social media feeds we want to see something that's motivating and entertaining. Instagram, in particular, is an escape from reality but who wants to see happy faces all the time? We believe Instagram can be more than filtered selfies. The idea behind #ProjectReCognition is simple. We selected around 100 photos from 5000 public accounts on Instagram and we are recreating and reshooting these photos again in Los Angeles! This photo is quite creative and strange at the same time. It shows a pose which is very different to that in the conventional selfies. The matching teddy bear and mobile cover really add to the effect.

5. Can I Get One of Those?

The idea behind Project #ReCognition is simple: We are recreating and reshooting some creative photos from Instagram users. This project is a way of questioning our behavior on social media by focusing on ordinary yet dramatic moments of our life. The people we chose are different. we admire their bravery and ability to express themselves openly on social media. They portray true stories of our generation. Stories of greed, fear, anxiety, love, and hate. Thank you so much @oxyetonoxyel for the inspiration. We really enjoyed recreating this shot. This set of photos presents a girl standing with a barcode tagged on her upper back. Compared with the original, in the recreated image the background is far less blurred.

4. Sideways

The idea behind @ProjectReCognition is simple. We went through more than 5000 public accounts on Instagram and selected 100 photos and we are recreating and reshooting these photos again in Los Angeles! The people we chose are different. we admire their bravery and ability to express themselves openly on social media. They portray true stories of our generation. Stories of greed, fear, anxiety, loneliness, love, and hate. We want to show that when we are more human on social media, it doesn’t make us vulnerable. This project is a way of recognizing and honoring these original and fearless storytellers. Thank you so much @ananouschka for your inspiration. We really enjoyed recreating this shot. Another set in which the Project ReCognition tried to emulate a unique pose. This time, the model is sideways during the picture. The major difference in relation to the original has to do with the background. The recreated picture is far clearer and the contrast of colors is far more appealing to the eyes.

3. Halloween…esque

The idea behind #ProjectReCognition is simple. This time the team recreated image of a girl with her mouth wide open and blood in her hand. It would appear that the blood is dripping from her mouth and being collected in the hand so as not to create a mess. There is a major difference in the picture definition between the original and the recreated photo and the original looks a lot more natural.

2. Calm Down

These two images depict a woman holding a knife to the camera. The recreated image takes a lot more care, as can be expected, when considering the background and color scheme but the original may carry more weight purely due to more expression on the model’s face.

1. Candle Wax

The recreated image shows a girl with a candle in her hand. The candle is lit and the wax from the candle is collecting on her hand. In the original, the same set of events is happening to a man as opposed to a woman, and where the woman is laying down as it happens, the man is in a standing pose. Furthermore, the woman’s picture has been made presented in black and white to add to the effect.

The Project ReCognition team will likely be releasing many more pictures in the near future. If you are interested, make sure to follow their Instagram.
